Greek Fire


Greek fire is the historical equivalent of a vanished stage trick that nobody can quite reverse-engineer. This Byzantine incendiary substance was famous for being hard to extinguish and for giving its users a serious advantage in naval encounters.


The exact formula was a closely guarded secret, and that secret disappeared. Scholars have suggested ingredients such as petroleum-related materials, quicklime, or sulfur, but no confirmed recipe survives. We have ideas, not certainty, and that gap matters.
